Michael Fassbender’s Assassin’s Creed movie just got a trailer, and it looks pretty damn good. The movie, which has been in development since last year, stars Fassbender and Marion Cotillard, and follows the story of a man who was seemingly executed but actually kidnapped by a corporation known as Abstergo to have the memories of his ancestors tapped into for purposes unknown.
The movie takes place in same universe as the long-running video game series by Ubisoft, with Fassbender playing a pair of all new characters—a modern-day prisoner, and a Spanish assassin from the 15th century whose genetic memories he taps into. Cotillard plays his handler, who teaches him how to use the machine called the Animus to relive the life of his ancestor.
The trailer shows off a lot of the aspects that made the games popular, including fast-paced melee combat, parkour, and the “leap of faith” that sees assassins plunging from high-rise buildings into stacks of hay. We don’t actually see Fassbender hit the hay, but the trailer does end with him diving like a bird of prey. Kanye West’s I Am a God plays throughout.
The movie will hit theaters on December 21st worldwide.
