One could easily argue that the video game space is more sought out for adaptations than ever before. Yes, even when considering the “dark days” when studios would simply go and grab a video game title and attempt to make it work, quality be danged. Fast forward to today, and MOST adaptations have been rather good, both in the live-action and animated space. Over at Netflix, there have been multiple animated series that have raised the bar; HBO had live-action perfection with a certain series, and at Amazon, it’s hoping a Warhammer 40K adaptation will be just as great, especially since it has a diehard fan starring in the show.
We’re talking, of course, about Henry Cavill, who has long shown his love for the franchise in many interviews. He’s talked about the various models he’s had, the lore of the universe, the games he’s played, and so on. In other words, he’s the perfect person to spearhead the show. However, the live-action adaptation has seen no true updates in a while, which has worried many fans.
Don’t fear quite yet, though, as Cavill went back to the very place where he got Warhammer 40K models as a boy and revealed on Instagram this update:
“My incredible team and I, alongside the brilliant minds at Games Workshop, have been working away in concept rooms, breaking down approaches to the enormity and magnificence of the Warhammer world. Together, we’ve been sifting through the plethora of incredible characters and poring over old tomes and texts. Our combined efforts have led us to a fantastic place to start our Universe, which has been agreed upon by those up on high at both Amazon and Games Workshop. That starting place shall, for now, remain a secret. Watch this space, though—more to come in time!”
If we take him at his word, why wouldn’t you do that with the clear excitement he has? Things do seem to be progressing well for the series. While it may seem odd to some people that it’s only just found its starting point, there is one thing to note.
Specifically, that this universe is freaking nuts with its lore. No, seriously, it has heaps of lore that go back decades, and none of it is what you expect it to be. Even the Space Marines are freaks of nature in the weirdest of ways, and they’re supposed to be “just human.”
So, if Cavill and the production crew think they have a good starting point, it’ll be interesting to see what that is.
