“Handheld gaming” and “mobile gaming” are two trendy buzzwords at the moment. Rumours are flying around regarding the Nintendo Switch 2, the Xbox handheld, and now the PlayStation handheld. Rumours recently broke that Sony is working on a new handheld console and now those rumours are gathering steam.
Bloomberg originally reported on the rumour and it was then backed up with evidence from a few other minor sources. However, now VGC has reported that the lads over at Digital Foundry have heard unofficial rumblings from Sony regarding the handheld.
“We’re not in the business of leaking things, but it’s interesting that this finally sort of started to make its rounds because it just sort of confirmed what we had seen and heard off the record about this existing.” ~ Digiatl Foundry

The lads from Digital Foundry went on to say that the idea of PlayStation 5 games running natively on a handheld is not a realistic one at this time. Especially not at the native resolution. They even drew a comparison between Xbox and PlayStation, explaining that the lower-powered Xbox Series S would benefit the Xbox handheld as developers are familiar with creating a less demanding variant of their games for that architecture.
Needless to say, it’s always exciting to get new handhelds. The PlayStation and Xbox handhelds are at least a good few years out. In the interim, they may be hoping for developments to occur in the handheld space.
