The folks over at Microsoft have a few things cooking up for the Xbox division. We might be a good ways off before we learn about some of these ideas, but it does look like one of them is, in fact, a handheld. Details are essentially non-existent. However, Phil Spencer was okay with the idea of alerting fans that we might see something on it in just a few years.
The head of Xbox, Phil Spencer, recently spoke with Bloomberg. During the conversation, the topic of handhelds came up. We’ve seen rumors for years about Xbox toying with the idea of bringing out a handheld Xbox device, especially now with Xbox Game Pass being spread around to a plethora of devices through cloud gaming. Still, it looks like the rumors can finally end, as Phil Spencer is noted to have a few prototypes in the works.
Bloomberg reported that the Xbox handheld is being worked on and that some consideration is being made about what it could do. Furthermore, it’s noted that the team is still looking at the market to develop a handheld on what it learns. So there’s nothing concrete yet for this new piece of hardware. Unfortunately, it’s also not something we’ll see land on the marketplace anytime soon. It’s noted that this device will still take a few years before its ready.
That would be a very interesting move for Microsoft to make. We’re certainly interested in seeing what an Xbox handheld could look like, but we’ll have to practice patience for now. In the meantime, Phil Spencer noted that there were no franchises off the table on if they could land on rival platforms. However, it’s uncertain what franchises could soon see its arrival for the like of the PlayStation 5 or Nintendo’s console successor.
