Starfield Design Director Responds To Shattered Space Criticism

October 9, 2024 by Dennis Patrick

Devs are still committed to making fixes.

Starfield has been the big game on Bethesda fans’ minds for a long time. Years ago, Bethesda first unveiled the title and confirmed it was meant for that next-generation console lineup. Of course, before Starfield launched, Bethesda was acquired by Microsoft, making this game exclusive to Xbox Series X/S and PC platforms. Since its release, there has been a community of players not exactly thrilled with the game.

You can appease everyone; some fans felt Starfield wasn’t for them. Add in the fact that the game just received its Shattered Space DLC, and fans are frustrated with the developers’ direction. In fact, the design director for Starfield, Emil Pagliarulo, was recently messaged in a lengthy set of X posts. These posts were criticisms over the direction Bethesda has been going with its games. Fortunately, it was just criticisms rather than outright bashing Bethesda and the team that worked on this game.

X user MountainDude112 commented on Bethesda’s direction, the number of bugs, and the team’s lack of effort to bring Starfield around or deliver DLC that only gets mixed reviews. They felt that some of the recent comments made by the team were also just pats on their backs for this game.

Starfield is a massive game, and it takes time for us to address things. We move as fast as we can, as safely as we can. Game development is always tricky, but with a game as big as Starfield, every fix could potentially break something else.

Emil Pagliarulo responded, noting that it was not their intention to seem like they were patting themselves on the back. They also note that they are very proud of Shattered Space, with most of the quests and levels being done by designers who have been working with Bethesda all the way back to Morrowind.

Maybe it’s a game of expectations. Fans want a lot, and we do all we can to accommodate them. Here’s what I can tell you – nobody, and I mean nobody, at Bethesda is patting themselves on the back while ignoring our players.

The design director goes on to say that expectations could play a factor with Starfield, as fans want a lot, and Bethesda is trying its best to accommodate them. Of course, they continue to say that the team will still adjust things for Starfield. However, because Starfield is such a big game, these things take time. Any small adjustment could potentially break something else.

We are certainly interested in seeing how Starfield evolves over time. Perhaps some players will look at this game much differently a year from now after more updates and content are added.
