Rumor: The Outer Wilds On Nintendo Switch Is Coming Out Soon

November 13, 2023 by Ryan Parreno

Annapurna’s game is a fine one, but it’s taken them too long to make good on this promise to Switch owners.

We have a new, very strong rumor that The Outer Wilds will finally be releasing onto the Nintendo Switch.

How strong is this rumor? Well, it comes from Twitter account Pyoro, who hasn’t gotten any of his rumors wrong since he started leaking them.

ResetEra was quick to disentangle the clues he gave out this time. Pyoro initially posted, “Finally we will be able to roast some marshmallows on the switch.” When prompted to give more clues, he replied, “Feb 2021 Direct.” Humorously enough, replying to his own tweet, Pyoro said “That Era thread title is wild lol.”

So, the roasting marshmellows reference seems to be a pointed reference to the game The Outer Wilds, simply because you would be doing such a thing out in the wild, over a campfire. When Pyoro pointed to the February 2021 Direct, Annapurna Interactive actually shared a trailer revealing that The Outer Wilds was coming to the Nintendo Switch. Of course, that last tweet was meant to be confirmation that Resetera was on the right track.

The Outer Wilds is a space exploration game akin to No Man’s Sky, which was already published on the Switch. You get 22 minutes to explore a world before the sun explodes and destroys the universe, but, there’s a twist that makes The Outer Wilds unique in its own genre.

There’s a timeloop that resets everything back so that you can continue exploring and learning about the mystery of your planet. What’s good about the loop is certain areas and events are not explorable in your first go around, so each reset can theoretically get you closer and closer to learning the truth behind the mystery.

So, you don’t get to explore entire galaxies in The Outer Wilds, but you do get to explore a solar system even after it immolates. That original Nintendo Switch trailer had it set for a release later that year, but it never got released and we never found out why.

Perhaps it simply ran into the same technical issues No Man’s Sky ran into on the Switch. But unlike Hello Games, Annapurna could afford to delay this Switch release until they had sorted out all the issues with it. Given this game’s real life time skip, fans are definitely expecting that Annapurna will be releasing a technically perfect The Outer Wilds for the Switch.

Here’s hoping that it really won’t take that much longer for Annapurna to meet this promise they made two years ago. For your enjoyment, we’re sharing the original trailer below.
