New Lies of P Boss Battle Footage Demonstrates New Details

September 12, 2023 by Ryan Parreno

It looks like Pinocchio isn’t fighting alone after all.

Round 8 has shared a new gameplay preview for Lies of P, showing us what some of the boss battles will be like.

We don’t get the names of these characters, but developer Round 8 has shared small new details that provide points of interest.

For starters, Pinocchio shows he has a parry, block, and evade. So I hope this clears up any questions of how much of a Soulslike this game is. You can also see Round 8 has stuck to their promise that it won’t be as hard as a Soulslike, as Pinocchio can be downed from attacks, but not completely defeated after just a few seconds.

We can see the inspiration from From Software with the design of the bosses themselves. They have clear attack patterns, are most commonly shown facing you dead center in the middle of the screen, and they also have obvious tells of when you can attack back. If it wasn’t for the full 3D movement, it could almost feel like playing Punch-Out.

One boss fight shows Pinocchio using a variety of fire enabled weapons against an eldritch like boss under a wine cellar. So it seems certain bosses have natural weaknesses as well, that the player can take advantage of when they know about it.

Another boss fight sees Pinocchio placing charges on the ground, like landmines, and then guiding the slow moving boss by prompting it to follow him, Pac-Man style, to the charges that detonate under its body. This kind of strategic play is possible in Lies of P, giving players incentive to find the easiest way to beat certain enemies.

One very interesting sequence shows Pinocchio fighting a boss alongside an NPC. The NPC will keep on fighting the boss even if you stop, for whatever reason. It’s not clear who this character is, if it’s an original creation of Round 8 or based on a character in the original novel. But for whatever reason, it looks like Pinocchio isn’t fighting the puppet threat against Krat all alone, after all.

Lies of P is close to releasing, and it’s one that gamers shouldn’t let slip, even as other big games are also releasing in close proximity. You’ll be playing Starfield for years, it’s OK to take a break and check out what Lies of P has to offer for a few hours too.

Lies of P will be releasing on September 19, 2023,on the PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S. You can watch the video courtesy of IGN below.
