How To Remove Tharchiate Withering (And Other Curses) In Baldur’s Gate 3

August 21, 2023 by Adam Carr

Messing with forces beyond your comprehension is a sure-fire way to get cursed in Baldur’s Gate 3, but how do you remove them?

Messing around with magical artefacts of unknown origin is not always a good idea in Baldur’s Gate 3. Sure, you might gain forbidden knowledge bestowed by the ironically dead god of the dead, but on the other hand, you might also get a debilitating curse that turns even the staunchest of heroes into a soggy flannel. That’s exactly what Tharchiate Withering does, but how do you remove it?

Like all curses, Tharchiate Withering is permanent without some sort of intervention. Once you have it, it isn’t going anywhere. Not only that, but the cure is not easily learned when first starting out. In this guide, we are going to walk you through how to get rid of curses, but you might not like our answer.

How To Remove Curses In Baldur’s Gate 3

To remove curses in Baldur’s Gate 3 you need to cast the Remove Curse spell. This is a level 3 spell, which means characters need to be around level 5 to learn it. Once learned, however, all you have to do is cast it. The question is, who can learn it?

Thankfully Remove Curse is learnable by a bunch of classes and characters. Both Shadowheart and Gale can learn it (with Shadowheart learning it by default). All you have to do is survive until your party gains the requisite experience to fix your folly.

Remove Curse works on all curses, not just Tharchiate Withering. That being said, curses are fairly rare in Baldur’s Gate 3. As a result, we don’t recommend having it on hand at all times. Instead, memorise it when it’s needed and drop it out of rotation once it has served its purpose.

If you don’t want to use a spell slot ever, then you have one final trick up your sleeve – scrolls. Whilst not common, Remove Curse scrolls do exist and can be used by any character. Despite their scarcity, the convenience of a scroll compared to the resource cost required to perform a Long Rest (potentially twice) makes them a tempting alternative.

Benefits Of Removing Tharchiate Withering In Baldur’s Gate 3

The benefits of removing a curse tend to be the removal of said curse. You are no longer afflicted, therefore, you have received a benefit. Tharchiate Withering is different, however. Contracted by reading the world’s most obviously cursed book, you get special treatment when ridding yourself of its necromancy.

Once cured, you are given a temporary Constitution buff that lasts until your next Long Rest. The temporary nature of the buff prevents it from being game-breakingly good, but it’s a nice reward nonetheless.

That’s all we have for Baldur’s Gate 3 for now. Be sure to check out our other guides and lists for more Baldur’s Gate content.
