San Diego Comic-Con has sadly come and gone, and many fans are still reeling from the “lesser” shown that we got due to the writers/actors strike that prevented certain things from being shown. However, when it came to video games, there were multiple panels that blew the roof off of the place due to the announcements made. Easily the biggest in many respects was Mortal Kombat 1. Ed Boon had teased that there would be big announcements, one of which was a trailer for their next animated movie. But for their upcoming title, the game got two trailers stacked with character reveals.
The first trailer was a story video highlighting three new fighters, two of which might surprise people. The trailer focused on the Umgadi group, a collection of female warriors sworn to protect the royal family of Outworld. The former leader, Li Mei, is one of the playable characters and was kicked out of the group after the king died on her watch. She now helps lead Outworld’s police force but still wishes to protect the royal family. She’ll be voiced by legendary actress Kelly Hu, who is well-known for her voice-acting ability.
In Li Mei’s place in the Umgadi is Tanya, who is very distrustful of her former comrade, even when her predictions become accurate.
We also see Baraka, who has a new backstory in the game but still wields his vicious brutality thanks to his “condition.”
But easily more exciting than this was the reveal of the Kombat Pack DLC characters. This was the trailer that had many rumors buzzing, and almost all of them were true. As revealed in the trailer below, we’re getting Omni-Man, Homelander, and Peacemaker within the pack. It’s also been confirmed that JK Simmons will voice Omni-Man. No word on the other actors doing their roles, but it’s easy to see that Peacemaker was modeled of John Cena’s interpretation, so it’s very likely.
But that’s not all. Joining them in this Mortal Kombat 1 Kombat Pack are Quan Chi, Ermac, and Takeda.
Given how NetherRealm Studios has done multiple Kombat Packs in the past, one can only wonder what the next packs will have, given the overwhelming presence of characters we have here.
No matter what, NetherRealm Studios is putting their all into their newest timeline, as they’re trying to make everything feel both familiar and fresh in the best ways. You could say it’s in their blood.
