PlayStation 4’s 4K Model Could Be Announced Sooner Than You Think

March 28, 2016 by Dennis Patrick

Sony may be announcing the PlayStation 4.5 before October according to new reports.

Sony only released their latest console, the PlayStation 4, within 2013, but it seems that we’re going to see their next console edition roll out sooner than previously imagined. Normally we see consoles last about six to seven years before it gets replaced by a more powerful successor.

There’s been rumors and reports recently that Sony would be bringing out a new PlayStation 4 model into the market, one that would beat out the specifications of the original PlayStation 4 and allow it to further support the upcoming PlayStation VR. Today the Wall Street Journal has reported that the new PlayStation 4 model, dubbed as the PlayStation 4.5, is not only real but slated to get announced before the October release of the PlayStation VR.

According to the Wall Street Journal, the PlayStation 4.5 model will release into the market as a secondary model and not a complete replacement for the PlayStation 4. Instead, this will be an option as a higher-tier model of Sony’s latest console and as it stands right now, there is no upgrade path established from Sony for previous PlayStation 4 owners to jump onto the latest model.

So far this new model will feature the necessary components to allow more power for the upcoming PlayStation VR. Additionally, the new PlayStation 4.5 would be able to handle ultrahigh-definition-resolution graphics though previous reports suggest that the PlayStation 4.5 will still come short of being able to provide 4K.

However, it’s not just Sony who may be releasing a newer console model shortly after the release of their latest flagship console. Microsoft has also been rumored to be working on a newer model of the Xbox One. As for Nintendo, they have opted to toss away the idea of an updated Wii U for a brand new console launch, the Nintendo NX, though they will continue to produce the Wii U after false rumors started to spread of the company ceasing production of the console.
