Advance Wars 1+2 Re-Boot Camp: Which Difficulty to Choose — Classic or Casual?

April 21, 2023 by Bryn Gelbart

You can switch difficulty at any point in Advance Wars: Re-Boot Camp, but we can help point you to the right place to start.

When you boot up your copy of Advance Wars 1+2: Re-Boot Camp you will be first faced with one big question. Which difficulty should you play on?

From the get-go you can choose to play Advance Wars (only the first game when you begin) on either Classic or Casual difficulty. The best part is that you can switch between the two at any time during your playthrough (just not mid-mission). This makes the decision non-binding, and you can just test out each to see what fits your play-style.

That being said, after a bit of time with the game it is pretty easy to recommend a difficulty depending on your background with the franchise.

Should you play Advance Wars 1+2: Re-Boot Camp on Casual or Classic?

Often, when a game remake separates its difficulties by “for newcomers” vs “if you’ve played the original” you can’t be sure what to believe. For example, even if you’ve played Resident Evil 4 before, the remake is enough of a new game that playing on Hardcore would be quite a challenge. Yet, the game says if you’ve played the original, that is the recommended difficulty. See, not always accurate.

But with Advance Wars: 1+2: Re-Boot Camp you can trust what you are being told. If you are familiar with the classic Advance Wars titles and are coming to these games as a way to revisit old favorites, choose Classic.

Casual mode, on the other hand, is stellar for newcomers to series that will spend half of the first Advance Wars getting used to the quirks and strategies. If you are coming to the game from Fire Emblem, you know how punishing these games can be. While Advance Wars doesn’t have perma-death, it can quickly get quite punishing on its regular difficulty. If you want to take your time to learn the mechanics and be allowed to fail, choose Casual.
