If you’ve paid attention to the Twitter feed of Ed Boon recently, you’ll know he’s been doing many different polls for fans to vote on. Some have been about his game, Mortal Kombat, and what you might like to see next. Such as a DLC pack of characters getting bundled and redone or a mode you’d like to see return to the game in its now-confirmed next version. But late yesterday, he decided to drop a different kind of poll that focused on the fighting game genre, and it started many conversations among fans.
As you’ll see in the poll below, the question was about what other fighting game series you want to see get a new entry. When you look at the options below, you’ll see that he’s basically asking for what franchise you’d want to revive:
Some interesting choices are here, even if the result is a bit predictable. But let’s break down each entry and why they could or won’t return.
For example, Dead or Alive has been alive for nearly three decades and released its sixth mainline entry in 2019. The series has been known for many things but typically is remembered for its female characters, especially because of a certain volleyball spinoff that was fan service to the extreme. Unfortunately, the last entry wasn’t as beloved due to certain flaws in its multiplayer, and there are rumors that the franchise may be done.
As for Killer Instinct, the franchise is in a weird spot. Microsoft revived the franchise already for the Xbox one and made it one of their launch titles. That included making a free version that players could use that would rotate fighters over time. The game became a cult classic and is respected for its mechanics, updated characters’ looks compared to the originals, and powerful music. But despite all that, a sequel to the rebirth was never done.
Virtua Fighter is said to be dead, and given how it’s not really been more than an arcade game, that’s easy to understand why.
Finally, there’s Marvel Vs. Capcom, which many hail as one of the best fighting game series ever. Or, at least, they did until the last mainline game came out and destroyed everything that was built before it. There was plenty wrong with that game; fans made Capcom and Marvel know it. So hopefully, you understand why fans wanted it to get a new game in the poll.
Is it weird that the Mortal Kombat co-creator was asking about this? Not really. Sometimes you got to ask what the people want.
