Legend of Zelda Tears of the Kingdom Tops Famitsu’s Most Anticipated Game’s List

January 23, 2023 by Todd Black

We’re not surprised. Like, at all.

The last week has been very fun for gamers. Why? Because three titles came out, that will take up much of their time. Specifically, a trio of JRPGs emerged from the past and present to give them something to play in these early days of 2023. It used to be that months like January and February didn’t have any big releases, but thankfully that’s changed in recent times, especially with Nintendo. That’s appropriate because Nintendo has some big titles coming out in the first five months of this year, but the biggest is The Legend of Zelda Tears of the Kingdom.

The title was first announced at E3 2019, and since then, fans have been dying for more information. Sadly for them, Nintendo would only bring up the game in subsequent years to either tease it very slightly or say the game was delayed. It wasn’t until the back half of 2022 that we even discovered the game’s title. Thankfully, we know the game will arrive in May, which is enough to tide fans over for now.

As fans wait for a new trailer, likely via a Nintendo Direct, the anticipation for the game grows. You might recall at The Game Awards that Legend of Zelda Tears of the Kingdom won the “most anticipated game of 2023” award. Famitsu is adding to that honor because the title is on their most anticipated games list too.

The newest entry in the rankings came out, and it holds a narrow lead over Final Fantasy 16. No.3 on the list was Fire Emblem Engage, which came out recently.

So let’s ask, “why is it so anticipated when we know so little about it?” The answer to that is simple; the previous game was legendary. Breath of the Wild was the first game in the franchise to truly embrace an open-world aesthetic instead of having a large area to go through in a specific manner. Instead, you could tackle the four main dungeons in any order and scour the land for mini-dungeons to get heart pieces.

There were plenty of side quests, dragons to find, secrets to unlock, etc. The title was Game of the Year for most people, and the new game is a direct sequel to that one. Plus, Eiji Aonuma is once again heading up the project, and that man knows how to make a quality title. It just takes time to get to that point.

Either way, fans are hyped for it, and it will stay that way until its release.
