When it comes to video games, there are many ways to “honor it” before release. You can cover its news when it announces something big. You can do previews on it based on what you know or what you’ve played. Or, if you’re a gaming magazine, you can make it your “cover story.” Meaning it not only is the first thing people see when they get your newest issue, but you dedicate ample space in the magazine to talking about the title. For Famitsu, they’ve revealed that the next cover story they’ll do is about Fire Emblem Engage.
Nintendo fans won’t be shocked about this in the slightest, given that the anticipated game is coming out on Friday and is Nintendo’s first big release for 2023. The franchise has been selling well over the years on consoles, handhelds, and mobile platforms, so Nintendo is undoubtedly hoping that trend continues here.
You can see the cover for the Famitsu issue below:
The cover happily showcases the main character of Alear in both forms, as you, the player, will determine if they’re male or female when you start. We also see some characters they’ll interact with, including the Fell Dragon, their enemy.
As the tweet also notes, Fire Emblem Engage is heading towards a big launch in Japan and has the country’s highest pre-order numbers in the series’ history. We’ll find out tomorrow what people think of the game when the review embargo drops.
Based on the early previews of the game, the title seems to embrace both the classic structure and feel of the original games of the franchise. But the title also goes bigger with many of their game mechanics and visuals. The story might be the only “iffy” element of the game, but that’s possibly because the people who previewed it and they weren’t able to experience the full story at the time.
In the game, you’ll play as Alear, a member of a family of dragons who has been asleep for 1000 after a great battle with the Fell Dragon. The vile dragon was sealed away, but now he awakens, and so must you. To defeat the beast, you must wander the land and recover the twelve Emblem rings that house the spirits of past heroes.
These rings will give you great power within battle, and alongside your allies, you’ll fight to free the land of the Fell Dragon once and for all!
