What do you do when your game is built around a great idea but has no substance? This was the problem met by the team originally working on Metal Gear Rising, they had perfected the "cut anything" mechanic and could create an awesome CG trailer (see above) but could think of no way to turn that into an enjoyable game. So, after half-completing Rising, it was canned, leading to a complete silence that both teased and frustrated those interested.
At some point Platinum Games learned that it had been cancelled and reached out with the intention of finishing the game but, ultimately, they came to the same conclusion: the game was fun as it was but without substance. So they scrapped the story, scrapped the levels that had been created and started from scratch.
Now we've got a game that takes place several years after Metal Gear Solid 4, rather than in the time leading up to the game, and so the chances of re-enacting that fantastic battle with Vamp are somewhat diminished.
Some people, people who were seemingly expecting a Metal Gear game where you can both cut soldiers into small, bloody lumps with your sword and, at the same time, huge amounts of stealth elements, were disappointed by the action-based gameplay seen in the trailer. In reality we're lucky we've got anything at all.
According to Andriasang, who put together all this information, there will be a new English language trailer tomorrow.
