Occasionally, a thought-provoking indie game starts to gain traction. That’s the case with The Flame in the Flood. The synopsis is vague enough to leave you wondering what the game even entails: “The Flame in the Flood is a rogue-lite river journey through the backwaters of a forgotten, post-societal America,” it reads. “Forage, craft, outwit predators and brave the rapids as you make your way down the procedurally generated river.”
But it’s not so vague that you can outright dismiss it. Especially knowing that it was designed by BioShock and BioShock Infinite creatives under the banner of the company The Molasses Flood. For those who like country music, The Flame in the Flood‘s soundtrack was composed by musician Chuck Ragan. But even if that doesn’t sound like your bag, the artwork alone should be enough to make any gamer want to check it out — it’s as majestic as any AAA game, and its unique design aesthetic really stands out as something special. The game went live on Steam Early Access back in September and was met with intrigue.
The most exciting part, though, is that you’re accompanied by your trusty dog Aesop as you journey down the river. It’s almost like Fallout 4 meets Oregon Trail, no?

The Flame in the Flood drops on February 24 and will be available on Xbox One, PC, and Mac via Steam. The game is currently available for pre-order.
