PlayStation Japan announced today that indie game Downwell is coming to PlayStation 4 and PlayStation Vita. The game was featured in a video highlighting indie games coming to PS4 in Japan, along titles like Unravel, No Man’s Sky, and Goat Simulator.
There currently isn’t a a solid release date for the game on either console. There also still hasn’t been any official word as to whether the game will appear on PlayStation 4 and PlayStation Vita in the North American or European territories either. Despite that, the Devolver Digital official Twitter account did ask fans to discuss the game’s possibility last Fall. That tweet, along with the Japan release, make a Western launch on PlayStation consoles pretty likely. The game would also be following in the footsteps of other popular indies that started on steam and ported to PS4. Such games include Octodad, Don’t Starve, and Helldivers.
In case you’re a bit fuzzy about Downwell, it’s a vertical shooter about a man who jumps down a procedurally-generated well and shoots lots of monsters. The game first released on Steam and iOS this past October. Think of as an aesthetic cross between Spelunky and The Binding of Isaac, with a bit of Cave Story sprinkled in. It isn’t a surprise that the game is releasing on PS4 in Japan first, as the developer, Ojiro Fumoto, is Japanese.
Devolver Digital is a prolific indie game publisher. They rose to fame with Hotline Miami, and have published other good indie games like The Talos Principle and Titan Souls. You can read our own recent interview with them here.
