Starbreeze Studios' forthcoming Syndicate reboot hasn't exactly received a warm reception from fans of the 1993 original. The most common complaints center around the fact that the franchise has abandoned its isometric, tactical roots in favor of a trendier FPS approach.
The game's latest trailer seems to be aimed squarely at these skeptics, trying its best to link this new title with its predecessor. Its main argument — that the technology, plot elements, and gameplay borrow heavily from the established Syndicate universe — probably won't sway the diehard holdouts, but as someone with little to no vested interest in the old games, I'm definitely intrigued.
Sure, a cyberpunk FPS centered around corporate intrigue has been done before (and in the last month, no less), but with Starbreeze's pedigree as the developers of Riddick games and a rich universe to pull from, Syndicate has the potential to be something surprising.
We'll know for sure when the game releases on the 360, PS3, and PC early next year, hitting North America on February 21 and Europe on the 24.
