We finally have new details for Mario Tennis: Ultra Smash, courtesy of GameXplain. You can subscribe to them on YouTube here.
These are the playable characters:
- Mario
- Luigi
- Toad
- Peach
- Daisy
- Bowser
- Wario
- Waluigi
- Yoshi
- Boo
- Donkey Kong
- Rosalina
Of course, the highlight among the batch is new playable character Rosalina, who literally floats around the courts and has some sass to match Daisy’s disses.
Controls are similar to 3DS’ Mario Tennis Open. Movement can be done on either the left analog and the dpad. The a button does topspin, b for slice shot, x for simple shot, and y for flat shot. You can also use special combinations between a and b for special shots.
Also carrying over from Mario Tennis Open is the Chance Shot. Chance Shots allow you to indirectly attack your enemy with a special effect, such as hitting them with a Bob-Omb, by using a special shot on a specific area of the player’s court at the right time.
All control schemes are supported, including the GamePad, Pro Controller, Wii Remote, and Wii Classic Controller. No motion or touch screen controls are in use, but if you use the GamePad, you can play VS matches such that the GamePad player sees his or her side on the controller screen, and the other player sees their side on the TV.
There is multiplayer, and online multiplayer, allowing two players on one console to fight another team online. There is amiibo functionality as well, allowing you to train and play against amiibo as playable characters. It functions exactly the same way as in Super Smash Bros, but we don’t know yet if a single amiibo can store both Super Smash Bros and Mario Tennis: Ultra Smash data.
Our source only got to play one mode, Megaball Rally. You try to keep a single rally going for a ball as long as possible. While our source expressed concern regarding a dearth of content compared to previous Mario Tennis games, it’s reasonable to expect unlockables, including characters and stages, and maybe game modes. Who knows? There might even be a release schedule planned, just likeSplatoon.
Mario Tennis: Ultra Smash comes out exclusively for Wii U on November 20th in Europe and North America, and later this year in Japan. Check out some preview footage starring Daisy, Rosalina, Wario, DK, Waluigi, and Yoshi, as well as an image gallery, below.
