Thatgamecompany Shooting for Different ‘Emotional Experience’ with Next Game

October 12, 2015 by Michael Fossbakk

Austin Wintory is not composing the game’s music.

Thatgamecompany, developer of 2012’s Journey, has revealed that, with its next game, the company is not trying to strike the same emotional chord of Journey.

In response to a query on Twitter about the game’s development status, thatgamecompany simply said that its next game “won’t have the same emotional experience as Journey.”

@Mostafa_7os The only other info is that it won't have the same emotional experience of Journey and @sklathill is composing the music.

Thatgamecompany also revealed that Vincent Diamante is composing the new game’s music. Journey’s music, on the other hand, was composed by Austin Wintory and received a Grammy nomination for it, a first for a video game soundtrack.

The only other information on this unannounced game is that it will be a multiplatform multiplayer title that will be “an emotionally engaging experience centered around human connections for players of all ages and backgrounds.” The developer also secured $7 million in venture capital funding from Capital Today in May of last year to be able to independently publish its next game.

Journey was released in 2012 and received high critical praise for its art direction, innovative gameplay, music, and more. The road to its release was far from easy, but thatgamecompany wanted to produce a game that would let players connect on a “human level.” Since Journey’s release, some its development team has gone on to start other studios or join new projects, but game director Jenova Chen remains at the company.
