Hello Games has dropped a brand new trailer for No Man’s Sky to mark the game’s new Leviathan Expedition. In the 7th Expedition for the game, players will find themselves trapped in a cursed time loop that effectively turns the spacefaring open-world adventure into a roguelike. The Leviathan Expedition also brings in, well, leviathans into the game world, in the form of what looks like massive floating space squids.
The expedition gets underway today as a free expansion for all players and will run for six weeks while players navigate the time loop in an effort to break the curse and enjoy the new narrative that’s all wrapped around this new mystical space creature. It looks pretty awesome, even if roguelikes aren’t your thing. Check out the reveal trailer right here to get a glimpse of what’s to come for yourself.
The difficulty is tuned to survival-mode settings for the duration of the expedition and as with all roguelikes, a death will mean that the loop is reset. However, during each run players can regain Memory Fragments (essentially lost information from previous loop runs), which can have an effect on the way each successive run plays out, as the fragments manifest themselves as procedurally generated technology. Basically, it’s going to be different each time and there are plenty of challenges and wonders ahead.
At the end of the Leviathan Expedition, players’ progress will be converted into a Survival Mode save and Phase rewards will be able to be redeemed across all save games by using the Space Anomaly’s Quicksilver Synthesis Companion. Some of the rewards on offer include three different event-themed posters, the Temporal Starship Trail that can be added to the player’s ship, the Whalestalker Cloak, a miniature Organic Frigate Calf and The Leviathan itself can eventually be recruited as an organic addition to the player’s frigate fleet.
