Given the importance of superheroes in the wide-range of media today, it shouldn’t be too surprising that there are all sorts of gaming projects attached to properties like Marvel and DC Comics being worked on right now in secret. But especially recently, it seems like many of those projects never truly get off the ground (like the LONG-rumored Superman video game from Rocksteady or other developers), and in the case of a new Marvel MMO, that is now officially dead.
For those not in the know, the Marvel MMO was going to be made by Daybreak Games and Dimensional Ink. If that sounds familiar, it’s because those are the people who made the very popular (and still ongoing) DC Universe Online MMO. And yet, despite that pedigree, they aren’t going to be able to make its Marvel counterpart work.
“EG7 today announced it will be discontinuing the development of the Marvel project at Daybreak Games,” the press release said. “Based on the re-evaluation of the development risk profile, size of investment, and the long-term product portfolio strategy for the group, the board has decided to change the development priorities and reallocate resources within the group to focus on alternative long-term projects.”
As for what the team is going to focus on now:
“The company had planned to invest more than SEK 500 million in the Marvel project over the next three years,” the press release continued. “The company will now diversify this investment across multiple, smaller size projects within the group, including the previously announced major upgrades to The Lord of the Rings Online and DC Universe Online, and new game opportunities with our first party, original IPs.”
So they clearly were going to spend time on it, but things just didn’t work out. Oh well, maybe the next one will be what gets seen by fans.
