Square Enix is set to release multiple new games over the coming year, but the company seems to be focused on Final Fantasy XVI in particular. David Gibson, a Japan-based analyst, made a post on Twitter to describe some of the new information coming from the JRPG juggernaut.
During an earnings call on Friday, Square Enix reportedly talked about its plans for Final Fantasy’s 35th anniversary that will be revealed either this month or in June. It had previously created a special website for the anniversary, and stated that fans can look forward to “many exciting new ways to enjoy the worlds of Final Fantasy.”
The company has high expectations for the upcoming Final Fantasy XVI. Square Enix has already seen the trailer, which may be released online in the near future. The development of the game is supposedly in its final stages.
Final Fantasy XVI is the latest in the hugely popular JRPG series from Square Enix and it is being directed by Hiroshi Takai and produced by Naoki Yoshida. It was reported that Ryota Suzuki, a gameplay designer on Devil may Cry 5, had joined Square Enix as the battle director for the third business development division. It is rumored that he is working on Final Fantasy XVI.
The game is set in the fictional medieval-style location of Valisthea, which is a continent made up of six factions that are in conflict due to the spread of the Blight. This setting resembles the settings of previous games in the series like the original Final Fantasy and Final Fantasy XIV.
Square Enix has revealed details about three of the characters that will appear in the game. Clive Rosfield is the firstborn son of the Archduke of Rosaria. He was expected to inherit the Phoenix’s flames but his younger brother was chosen instead. Josha Rosfield is the younger brother, who has a more timid and caring personality. Finally, Jill Warrick was taken from her homeland to become a ward of Rosaria, and now lives among the Rosfield household.
Final Fantasy XVI was first revealed in September 2020 during a PlayStation Showcase stream. The game will be releasing as a PS5 exclusive.
