The Doctor Who franchise is in a bit of…well, Flux. We appreciate you all who got that reference. Mainly because as of right now, the current Doctor of Jodie Whittaker is one episode away from her own personal “finale” and then the question of Regeneration returns for many to ponder. But, one question that is already answered is that Russell T. Davies, who had arguably the most successful run of DW in the modern era, is coming back to helm the show. And where Davies is involved, rumors about David Tennant pop up. After all, he was the Doctor when Davies was around.
In particular, these rumors were either about Tennant somehow coming back as the Doctor in full (as in Jodie regenerates into Tennant’s past form somehow”, or, that Tennant will show up at the 60th anniversary special when it’s made. At a Comic-Con appearance, David Tennant had this to say on the matter:
“The thing about this I’ve been asked a version of this question for the last 20 years and I’ve learnt through bitter experience that there’s not any point even answering it because whatever i say is spun by whoever wants to hear it,” Tennant said. “So there’s no point in me denying it, there’s no point in me confirming it, there’s no point to be fudging it. Whatever i say will become whatever the internet wants it to be.”
Tenant noted that “It would be quite a weird idea, of course, and it’s not something that you would necessarily expect.”
He’s right on both accounts of course. Whatever he says, or doesn’t say will be spun into something the internet can consume. And it would be a “weird idea” for him to be the “next regeneration” as something like this never happened before.
There is no confirmation on who is, or isn’t, the next Doctor Who, so stay tuned!
