Morbius director, Daniel Espinosa has spoken out about what he thinks could happen to the MCU in the near future, and more specifically, about how an appearance from Miles Morales is just “a matter of time”. Espinosa – whose new Morbius film is getting roasted online by critics and fans – says that with the MCU leaning so heavily into multidimensional travel, it could leave the door wide open for a future appearance from the Spider-Verse version of the masked vigilante.
Morbius itself includes some classic multiverse tricks of the trade, with Michael Keaton once again donning the Vulture wings for a minor appearance in this Sony production. Espinosa recently spoke out to discuss the confusion surrounding the Morbius post-credits scene, before the topic was then switched to what he thinks about the multiverse concept, and where the future lies. “I believe that the concept of having different timelines came from Sony, not from Kevin Feige. It was Sony that initiated that idea,” said Espinosa. He went on to say that “You could bet your life on it that the Miles Morales you have in the Spider-Verse will be in the MCU at some point in the future.”
Espinosa went on to talk about how the fact there is a Spider-Man in the Morbius and Venom universes, and just because fans haven’t met him yet doesn’t mean there isn’t one. “In this world, Spider-Man exists. In all the different Marvel timelines, you have a Spider-Man, he is a totem. In the Marvel universe, there must be a Spider-Man in each individual universe for them to function.” He added, “He is one of the fundamental beings, that’s how it is in the comic books anyway.” He’s certainly got a point with what he’s saying, but let’s keep our fingers crossed that this potential Spider-Man – if he does appear in this universe – doesn’t get butchered like Morbius and Venom were.
