Masahiro Sakurai wrote about the most recent batch of DLC for Super Smash Bros for 3DS and Wii U, and he makes one promise to fans: it will all be fanservice from now on.
In his weekly article in Famitsu, he notes the huge effort taken to the recent DLC, from rolling out the updates, to simply making Ryu. Sakurai did reveal worries about putting together 3 characters, 3 stages, and 9 costumes in one update, particularly for 3DS owners, since the portable isn’t suited for successive downloads.
Regarding Ryu, Sakurai admits that with the control limitations, he is reminiscent of his appearance in Fighting Street, AKA the original Street Fighter. In the original incarnation of that game, you only had two attack buttons, and pressing these bespoke pressure sensitive buttons let you choose light, medium, and heavy attacks. For Super Smash Bros, the duration you hold on to the buttons will allow you to determine if he strikes light, medium or heavy.
Subsequently, Sakurai added command input versions of Ryu’s Smash moves, which are of course his trademark moves. As Sakurai put it, even if you are just a casual player, he expects you to have fun trying to pull off his exacting moveset, and even failing to make the moves come out will be part of the fun.
Now, Sakurai has confirmed he has received data from the large amounts of votes from the Smash ballots. His promise of pure fanservice comes with a caveat, as he cannot keep the team working on the game much longer. Most of these devs are with Bandai Namco, including people from Project Soul, Studio 765, and others. Of course, they will eventually have to move on to finish other pending projects.
So, there will not be that many more remaining Smash characters left. Who would you want to see join this illustrious list? Share your thoughts with us in the comments below.
