Hideo Kojima Working on a “Radical Project” in 2022

January 3, 2022 by Carley Garcia

Kojima has made it clear that he’ll keep working for as long as he can.

Last week, Hideo Kojima posted a holiday card to Twitter featuring a curious collection of characters we haven’t seen before. The developer has now posted the same image to the social media site again, this time with a little more information regarding upcoming plans for 2022. Whatever the future holds, it promises to be “radical.”

This year, I'm going to start a new work in earnest, and move to the next level of experimentation with a radical project. I'm also hoping to get the video team going. And I may start doing something like a radio project? pic.twitter.com/j0norcJ23a

The Metal Gear creator also shared some of his thoughts about the past year. “Although 2021 was still a very difficult year for us, we managed to deliver the release of Death Stranding Director’s Cut for PS5 safely even in this COVID situation while we were solemnly preparing and experimenting with new titles. This year, I’m going to start a new work in earnest and move to the next level of experimentation with a radical project. I’m also hoping to get the video team going. And I may start doing something like a radio project?”

In November 2021, Kojima Productions announced that it would open a new business division focusing on television and film in Los Angeles. This may come into play soon, as the developer recently stated that he wants to “make this the year that we take a step forward into a different medium and expression than games.” Speaking to Famitsu, Kojima also expressed what many game studios are looking forward to in 2022–getting back to normal. “I hope to regain the flexible, communicative, and speedy production rhythm we had before Corona as a studio,” he said.

In late 2020, Kojima Productions confirmed that the studio was working on a new project and that it is currently seeking applications for a number of positions in its Tokyo studio. In July, Hideo Kojima and Microsoft reached an agreement to “work out the details” for a new Xbox game.

Hideo Kojima turned 58 in August, but has made it clear that his retirement isn’t coming anytime soon. “Although my body is failing me, my creativity is not waning yet. Until my brain loses its creative power, I’ll continue to strive to create things. That’s my instinct, and that’s what I love to do.”
