God of War Ragnarok Producer Cory Barlog Explains Why The Game Will Complete Norse Mythology

September 16, 2021 by Dennis Patrick

Don’t expect a trilogy for Norse mythology.

2018’s soft reboot for God of War picked up the franchise in entirely new mythology for Kratos. After dealing with the Greek gods, Kratos is now facing a new challenge with Norse mythology. Again, there are new gods to face and areas to explore. However, if you were expecting this Norse mythology period for Kratos to take an entire trilogy, then you’re out of luck. This next new installment, God of War Ragnarok, will be completing the mythology.

Now we have the reason as to why Sony Santa Monica is wrapping up the mythology in just two games. Recently, Kaptain Kuba had the chance to interview the game director for God of War Ragnarok, Eric Williams, and the producer for this installment, Cory Barlog. When Kuba asked Eric why he decided to end the mythology with just two games, it was unveiled that the decision came from Cory Barlog.

Cory Barlog stated that it would have taken the team too long to complete the Norse mythology. God of War 2018 took the developers five years to make. While the sequel is not out yet, Cory feels it will be about the same as the first installment. That’s ten years right there, and if the third game is anything like the first two, we wouldn’t see a conclusion for another five years. So that’s fifteen years total to wrap up the narrative.

In the development team’s eyes, and it would feel like they were stretching the narrative out. Meanwhile, the narrative that they are trying to tell could be wrapped up in this story. It looks like Sony Santa Monica’s team can hit all the beats that Eric Williams is looking to achieve in this installment. Now the big question fans might be having is just where this franchise will land next. Currently, God of War Ragnarok will release sometime in 2022 for PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5.
