Pokken Tournament Almost Had Trainers Themselves Fighting

December 19, 2014 by Tony Ponce

Producer Katsuhiro Harada shares some behind-the-scenes game developments.

Japanese site Kultur and Korean site Inven have just published an interview with Tekken producer Katsuhiro Harada, who spoke about Tekken, of course, but also took a moment to discuss the upcoming Pokemon fighting game Pokken Tournament. There are no big earth-shattering developments to report, but there are some interesting behind-the-scenes tidbits that Let's Talk Nintendo was able to share.

As you would imagine, The Pokemon Company is very strict when it comes to the handling of its property. Despite that, Harada was allowed to incorporate almost all of the ideas he had for the game. Only a single idea was taken off the table:

I suggested that we have different Pokemon Trainers fight, and they immediately denied it.

This shouldn't be too much of a problem, considering how there are currently over 700 Pokemon to work with. At the very least, Harada believes the large Pokemon roster will give his team plenty of room to grow should they ever be allowed to turn Pokken into a series.

Pokken Tournament is currently scheduled for Japanese arcades in 2015. No other release plans have been announced, but I guarantee we'll see this one on Wii U eventually.
