Eidos-Montréal, the Square Enix owned developer Deus Ex: Human Revolution and Thief, has announced what it describes as a "new, state of the art game engine" known as the ‘Dawn Engine’.
The Dawn Engine will provide the basis for projects developed as part of the Deus Ex Universe at the studio and is based on a heavily modified version of Hitman studio IO Interactive’s Glacier 2 engine. Eidos Montreal has added new technology which allows for advanced AI, real-time physics, and improved rendering.
“The technology behind any game is a key component in ensuring that gamers are able to develop both an emotional and visceral connection to what they are experiencing within the game world,” David Anfossi, Studio Head at Eidos-Montréal, commented in a press release. “We’ve worked tirelessly over the last few years developing this engine, building upon and improving both the visual and immersive artistry in our games. We truly believe that our engine will help us to strengthen both the gameplay and storytelling experiences we strive to create.”
Eidos Montreal is currently looking to expand its team to develop projects using the Dawn Engine but there's not clear timetable yet as to when the first game developed using this technology will be released or even announced.
