Super Smash Bros 4 3DS Items Guide

October 4, 2014 by Ryan Parreno

This is a guide for the many items in Super Smash Bros for the 3DS.

This is a guide for all the items in Super Smash Bros for 3DS.

·         Special Flag

The Special Flag comes from Namco racer Rally-X. If you raise it for 4 seconds, you can earn an extra stock, or an extra KO count for Time Matches.

·         Rocket Belt

This is a new item, originating from Pilotwings. Users can jump six times in succession, and can refuel to use again. It also allows the user to pick up more items.

·         Super Leaf

This turns any character into their Tanooki form. They can spin their tail to hit switches or strike opponents. They can also flap their tail to slow their ascent, just like in Super Mario Bros 3.

·         Screw Attack

When you pick up this power up from Metroid, you can use it to attack. The attack comes out as an uppercut-like jump attack. It has little vertical range but jumps up to medium range.

·         Back Shield

This shield protects primarily for projectiles, absorbing energy and deflecting other attacks. It frees up your hands to take other items.

·         Franklin Badge

This preview does not really show what effect the badge has. In Super Smash Bros Brawl, it protects you from electric projectiles, so it may have the same effect here.

·         Boss Galaga

The Galaga will circle around a few times before grabbing an opponent using its tractor beam and flying it off the stage. Its targets can shoot it down before it tries anything, though.

·         Killer Eye

The Killer Eye is essentially a turret. You can strike it to change what position it fires at. It can even be laid on its back to shoot upwards.

·         Beehive

The Beehive is a risky item to use. You can throw it at an opponent, for a swarm of bees to strike him or her. However, if you fail to hit someone, the bees will come for you, as the person who broke their hive.

·         Cucco

Cuccos are thrown at opponents as self activating traps. When a Cucco receives enough damage, it calls other Cuccos to attack the fighters around it.

·         Beetle

The Beetle comes from The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword. It flies in a straight line, left or right of the stage, and will carry any opponent in the way out of the ring.

·         Boomerang

Just like in Mario Kart, you can throw the boomerang and it will come back, to give you a total of three strikes.

·         Blue Shell

When you throw a blue shell at an opponent, it hits the opponent, floats above him and her, and then strikes him or her again.

·         POW block

The POW block makes the stages shake every time your throw it on the ground. You can use it three times.

·         Team Healer

This is a team up item. Throw it at a teammate, and it will help them recover health. If you throw it at an opponent, things get unpredictable as there is a chance it will heal him or her too, but it is more likely to hurt them.

·         Soccer Ball

The soccer ball acts like it does in the Mario Strikers games. You can’t grab it, but if you strike it, it will eventually catch flame and strike someone in the direction you push it.

·         Unira

The unira are the blue spiked sea urchins from the game Clu Clu Land. You can throw it at enemies for damage. The unira will get larger and extend its spikes to hit enemies, and it even has a slight vortex effect drawing those enemies towards it.

·         Spring

Jumping into a spring launches you up into the air. If you were attempting a normal attack, the attack will be canceled when you walk into that spring. The spring can also be attacked and thrown around.

·         Bumper

This pinball like bumper can now be fastened mid-air. Once activated, it knocks back any fighters who so much as touch it.

·         Banana Peel

The banana peel causes pratfalls. Throw one on the ground and opponents who slip on it are momentarily stunned. Unlike before, the peel disappears immediately after making one opponent slip.

·         Green Shell

The green shell acts like it does in the Mario platformers. Jump on top of a shell, or throw it, and it will slide until it falls off the stage, or hits something else. If it hits an opponent, they receive damage.

·         Mr Saturn

Mr Saturn can’t damage opponents, but it does come in useful in crowded stages. It will push items forward when it moves, and it easily breaks shields. Unlike other items, Mr Saturn sticks around.

·         Hothead

When thrown, hotheads release spark bursts while sliding across the ground. When they come in contact with fire or electricity, they get even larger and do more damage.

·         Pitfall Seed

This bizarre item looks like a ball with an exclamation mark, but acts different from how you expect. Using it creates a hidden pitfall on the ground, which will trap and cause damage when a fighter walks over it. Pitfalls disappear if no one finds them for too long. You can also actively throw a seed at an opponent to hurt and stun him or her.

·         Smoke Ball

The smoke ball can obscure the stage by filling it with fog of different colors when thrown. It doesn’t do much damage to opponents but is more useful as a trap of sorts.

·         Freezie

Freezies will slide in one direction on their own. You can throw it an opponent for freezing damage, but you can also strike it before  it gets picked up to break it.

·         Deku Nut

Deku Nuts explode when they are thrown or attacked, and also just before it times out. It stuns characters in range, unless they’re midair, in which case it damages those opponents instead.

·         Hocotate Bomb

This only looks like Olimar’s ship, but it’s actually a dud piece of spacecraft. Activate it for liftoff and it will drop down and explode in a random area.

·         X Bomb

When thrown, the X bomb does not spread across a wide area, but instead bursts in a cross or X shaped radius. It only damages anyone hit by one of those four explosive bars it generates.

·         Bombchu

Bombchus come from Ocarina of Time. They can move across walls and ceilings and explode when they hit a player.

·         Smart Bomb

The smart bomb is one of the most powerful items in the game, and is identifiable by the B on its face side. Once thrown, it causes damage across a wide radius for almost three seconds. Occasionally, there are dud smart bombs, but these have a chance of blowing up as soon as someone picks them up.

·         Motion-Sensor Bomb

A stick bomb without a timer. Whatever you thrown it on becomes an explosive, but to activate, it needs to be attacked by another item, or a fighter. It causes high knockback and damage.

·         Bob-omb

A walking time bomb that will explode on their own, unless you pick them up and throw them at an opponent. Either way, it can cause high damage.

·         Steel Diver

Based on the sub from the game of the same name, the Steel Diver is simply another gun, that happens to throw out airborne torpedos.

·         Gust Bellows

The gust bellows create powerful blasts of wind that can blow opponents away. If you drop it, however, the gusts go crazy.

·         Drill Arm

When activated, the drill shoots out from the handle, to strike a target and drag them in a certain direction.

·         Fire Flower

The fire flower becomes a shooting item in Smash. A short but unpredictable flame bursts out of the flower. Shoot as rapidly as you can, because it only works for seven seconds.

·         Ray Gun

The ray gun always changes its abilities in every game it appears in. What stays the same is that it fires 16 green laser shots at a medium rate and with high knockback. This time, the Smash Bros logo is emblazoned in the muzzle itself.

·         Super Scope

The Super Scope returns with few changes. It does have more focused shots that appear as beams. The Super Scope can shoot out as much as 48 shots in 7 seconds.

·         Golden Hammer

This hammer comes from obscure NES game Wrecking Crew, but is very similar to the Donkey Kong hammer. Unlike the latter hammer, it appears on top of a platform, and hits harder and faster. It also has more horizontal range.

·         Home-Run Bat

The bat is a straightforward weapon. It almost always guarantees a KO when used against an opponent, making it a highly favored and feared item.

·         Hammer

The more conventional Hammer, found in Donkey Kong, also almost always guarantees a KO. It is a close range item that makes the user a deadly clobbering vortex for seven and a half seconds.

·         Ore Club

The ore club is a powerful conventional melee weapon on its own, with great range, but it can also create tornadoes that travel to the edges of the stage.

·         Fire Bar

The Fire Bar is a unique weapon in Smash. Six fireballs form this bar, and it is given a handle to be controlled like a sword. Every hit of the sword reduces it by one fireball. When it’s down to one fireball, you can still hold on to it as a very short, but still effective, melee weapon.

·         Star Rod

The Star Rod is a versatile item, as one of the most powerful items in the Kirby universe. It can fire sixteen shots and works as a melee weapon. More importantly, it breaks down many rules on how items get reflected.

·         Lip’s Stick

The Lip’s Stick is a melee item with little knockback, but has an interesting effect. Every time it strikes a character, the flower releases damage sprouts and ‘dust’ that increases its damage potential. The more you use it, the bigger and more powerful the flower becomes as well.

·         Beam Sword

The beam sword is a Smash mainstay that can deal charged and melee attacks. In the new game, the sword boasts graduated colors.

·         Bullet Bill

When you use this item, you become the Bullet Bill temporarily, occupying a big part of the stage and gaining partial control of what direction you fly.

·         Lightning Bolt

This item acts like the Mario Kart item of the same name. When used, it shrinks everyone else on screen. It can sometimes backfire and shrink only the user.

·         Timer

The Timer slows the whole stage down except for the user who activated it. It can sometimes backfire and slow down only the user.

·         Superspicy Curry

Instead of a weapon, curry acts more like a status effect. Eating the curry burns the user, and he or she then gains more dangerous attacks. The effect wears off, but it can be temporarily suspended by grabbing the burning character.

·         Bunny Hood

The bunny hood makes users move faster, and increases the height of their first and second jumps.

·         Metal Box

Metal boxes give out a status effect; it turns the player character into metal. While metal, the character becomes heavier, takes no damage from hazards or poisonous gases, can walk underwater, and most importantly, becomes more powerful.

·         Starman

This is the same star item in the Mario games, giving the user invincibility for 10 seconds.

·         Warp Star

This star comes from the Kirby games, and is basically a ride. You get up on the star to start flying off stage and you have partial control over where it lands.

·         Poison Mushroom

The poison mushroom shrinks the character that touches it, lowering attack power and range. On the flip side, it actually gives the same character better recovery.

·         Fairy Bottle

The bottle reduces damage by 100 %. However, if the user hasn’t received any damage yet, it will not have any effect.

·         Heart Container

Health restoring item from the Zelda games. It falls on the ground slowly and it acts slowly, so you need to stay in place for it to work its best.

·         Maxim Tomato

Another healing item that can restore as much as 50 %.

·         Food

Various health restoration items, which recover different amounts of health.

·         Sandbag

Sandbag was originally conceived of for the Home-Run Contest. It doesn’t get hurt when you strike it, but you can send it flying towards enemies to throw them off stage. Doing so also makes other items appear.

·         Blast Box

Crates usually hold items, but not blast boxes. Trying to open them creates explosions with huge damage and knockback. You can also throw boxes towards your enemies.

·         Party Ball

Similar to piñatas, party balls can be struck or thrown to open and reveal more items. It floats up and drops the items when opened.

·         Crate

Crates are common item containers, sometimes made of metal or wood, or, in this case, wrapped like presents. Occasionally, crates are actually exploding traps.

·         Capsule

Item containers can be thrown to attack other players. They have a 12.5 % chance of exploding.

·         Daybreak

The Daybreak is a powerful weapon from Kid Icarus Uprising. After collecting the three pieces, it automatically assembles to a powerful laser weapon. It strikes a beam against everyone directly in front of the user.

·         Dragoon

The Dragoon is a powerful weapon from the Kirby series. After collecting the three pieces, it automatically assembles to a single ship. After that, like Zero Suit Samus’ Final Smash, you jump on the ship and target opponents on the stage.

·         Pokeball

The Pokeballs carry Pokemon, each of which has a different effect.

·         Assist Trophy

The assist trophies are under glass so you never know what’s inside until it is actually used. Effects vary depending on who or what the trophy is.

·         Smash Ball

Of course, the Smash Ball allows you to use the Final Smash.
