Destiny Becomes World’s Fastest Selling New IP as Rate of Public Events Doubles

September 17, 2014 by Stephen Daly

100 million hours of the game have been played so far.

Destiny has reached sales of $325 million in five days and has been played for 100 million hours in its first week, making it the fastest selling new IP in history, according to publisher Activision.

"Millions of gamers are having a great time playing Destiny and can't put down their controllers," Activision's Eric Hirshberg commented. "And this is just the beginning. Destiny is a platform that will grow and evolve and we will continue to work closely with our partners at Bungie to bring a long line of new experiences and content to life in the game."

Activision says the 100 million hour mark is comparable to Call of Duty launch weeks. The publisher made $500 million, reportedly the game's development cost, on launch day due to sales to retailers, but the $325 million figure is actual sales to players.

Destiny was also Activision's biggest ever digital launch. Despite the game's success, the game has received a lukewarm response from critics and this may cost developer Bungie $2.5 million due to their 2010 contract with Activision.

The Seattle based developer released a hotfix for the shooter today, which doubles the rate of public events following fan criticism of their rarity. Xbox One bootflow issues were also addressed by the hotfix and Bungie commented:

"Not every update that you apply to Destiny will contain revolutionary changes to the player experience. As we support the world of Destiny beyond the launch, much of what we do behind the scenes will be dedicated to ensuring the services that support the game are stable."
