Following Ubisoft’s presentation of Tom Clancy’s The Division at E3 2014, the publisher has brought the game to gamescom in Cologne, Germany, where the game is being showcased to the public for the first time ever using the same demonstration that was previewed by the press at E3 behind closed doors.
Developed primarily as an online game, The Division is set in the city of New York, in the aftermath of a devastating manmade virus which has run its course throughout the city, decimating human life in the area. Players step into the boots of an agent of The Division, a government organization sent in to clean up the mess and to retake the city from chaos.
The first of the new gamescom screenshots reveals players preparing to engage in combat with a group of pyromaniacal enemies known only as the Cleaners, which is dedicated to the eradication of the Black Friday pandemic by pretty much killing everyone they perceive to be infected or under threat of infection—which, again, means everyone.
The game’s open-world environment spans from fully explorable subways and rooftops to open city streets. Check out the screenshots for more details.
The Division is planned for a 2015 release on the PC, PS4 and Xbox One. It was originally planned for release in 2014, but the publisher decided the to delay the game as it needed more polish before releasing it into the wild.
