Activision has corroborated earlier reports that Amazing Spider-Man 2 has been delayed for the Xbox One, with no release date in sight. You may have seen earlier screenshots from the official site, but we decided to take our own for your perusal below.
This seems to be the only platform the game has been delayed for, with an April 29 release date still scheduled for Windows, PS3, PS4, Wii U, and Xbox 360, and a similar game also coming out the same day for 3DS. A separate mobile version is available now for iOS and Android.
Activision may have spoken on their behalf, but Quebec-based developer Beenox is presumably the company behind the delay. The company made their name making ports of popular games for PC and Wii, and also making franchise games like Monsters vs Aliens. Activision has tasked Beenox with making Spider-Man games since 2010, starting with Spider-Man: Shattered Dimensions.
Beenox has released a new Spider-Man game every year since then except for last year, presumably in preparation for next gen. Now here’s the deal: The Amazing Spider-Man 2 is their 1st game for Xbox One and PS4. (On a side note, they made their first Wii U game in 2012, for the first Amazing Spider-Man game.)
For the record, Beenox has a just OK track record with the Spider-Man games. Shattered Dimensions was critically acclaimed, its sequel Edge of Time received by critics very poorly, and Amazing Spider-Man doing just OK. Lacking word from Beenox, we would have to guess the company simply ran into the same development roadblocks other developers did, that led to resolution downgrades and other compromises. We would rather not speculate on these things, and hope Beenox and Activision reveal more details on this situation soon.
