The Outer Worlds: How To Join All 5 Primary Factions | Branching Story Guide

October 29, 2019 by Kevin Thielenhaus

Learn how to join all the factions, including the evil Board, with this quick Outer Worlds guide.

Your space-faring hero in The Outer Worlds can change the course of the Halcyon Colony depending on which factions you favor in the main story. Whether you’re working for the shady Sublight Shipping company, or joining a gang of space-communists called the Iconoclasts, you can sway the story and bring about a different ending for Halcyon. Some factions are hard to miss, while others, like the evil Board, are actually tricky to find.

Not every story plays out how you might expect, so they’re all worth pursuing in separate playthroughs. Naturally, working for one faction can put you in a bad place with another faction — depending on the mission, you can quickly rile up the wrong groups. If you do cause chaos in a town, just sleep for a few days and the guards will stop shooting at you. They have short memories — unless you’ve hurt a faction so much that you’re an instant enemy.

How To Join All 5 Primary Factions | Branching Story Guide
Most jobs on Groundbreaker will give you faction reputation.

Groundbreaker: Independent Faction – Go to Groundbreaker and just ask around. All quests on the Groundbreaker (except from competing factions) increase your status on the Groundbreaker. Talk to the Captain in Engineering, Gladys in the hotel, or the doctors at the clinic.

The Iconoclasts are Communist rebels.

Iconoclasts: Anti-Corporation Faction – The Iconoclasts are an anti-corporate group with a hideout in Amber Heights on Monarch. You can talk to Graham or Zora to begin doing quests for the Iconoclasts.

Find these goofs in the center of Stellar Bay.

Monarch Stellar Industries: Neutral Corporate Faction – This company is still loyal to the Board, and wants to reach its former glory. Find them in Stellar Bay on Monarch, in the big building in the center of the city. Talk to their boss Sanjar Nandi in the lobby to begin their questline.

Fallbrook is a Sublight town through-and-through.

Sublight Salvage & Shipping: Criminal Faction – A shady shipping company you’ll first meet on Groundbreaker. It’s on the left side of the Promenade. Take the lift up to talk to the leader Lilya Hagen. You can also find a large Sublight Salvage Faction presence at Fallbrook, on Monarch.

Welcome to Byzantium.

The Board: Evil Corporate Faction – You can actually join fairly early in the game. Enter the Board Embassy (right side, Groundbreaker Promenade) and talk to Udom Bedford. Select to turn in Phineas Welles, and then get Udom’s Seal from Gladys. Now you can travel to Byzantium and begin working for Sophia Akande.
