At the end of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare, Captain Price helps defeat the bad guys and goes home a hero.
But, there’s more to the story — an epilogue that’s jam-packed with references to the original Modern Warfare games. The final scene drops a whole lot of hints pointing at the potential future of the franchise’s main story, and I’ll explain everything you need to know. Don’t worry, for once, it’s super easy to be confused by all these weird names being thrown around.
Just as a warning, I’m about to enter into major spoilers territory. I won’t just spoil the ending of Modern Warfare (2019), I’ll also spoil major plot points for the original Modern Warfare games. Ending Explained | References, Easter Eggs & Sequel Hints
At the end of Modern Warfare (2019), Farah successfully defeats the evil Russian General Barkov with help from SAS Captain Price. After they successfully destroy the chemical weapon facility and assassinate Barkov, Captain Price meets with his CIA contact Laswell to discuss a new project — Task Force 141.
Let’s discuss all the Easter eggs, references, and hints in order of appearance. There’s a lot of stuff here.
General Shepherd
General Shepherd is an ally-turned-enemy in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2. The General gives Captain Price the information he needs to help Hadir fight a growing Russian threat. In his original appearance, General Shepherd essentially kicks off WW3, helping facilitate a terrorist attack against Russia that leads to the invasion of the United States. General Shepherd betrays Task Force 141, leading to Price killing him.
I can only guess, but we may get a new twist on General Shepherd in future games. He might still be an antagonist, but I’m seriously doubtful we’ll see a repeat of ‘Red Dawn’ in future games. Whenever he appears in the next game, it’s probably a good idea to keep careful watch. He’s directly responsible for the death of another character on our list.
Zakhaev
In Call of Duty: Modern Warfare (2019), Zakhaev is referenced as an evil Russian aiming to take Barkov’s throne. In the original game, Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare, Zakhaev was the leader of Ultranationalist forces fighting a civil war with the Russian Federation. As both a criminal and a rebel leader, Zakhaev sold nukes to friendly Middle-Eastern dictators.
The future is pretty well-laid out for Imran Zakhaev. He will almost certainly be involved in the plot of the next Call of Duty: Modern Warfare (2019) — but, he might not be the main villain. The roles might be switched with his son, Victor.
