CD Projekt Red Explains Why They Opted For First-Person Perspective In Cyberpunk 2077

September 16, 2019 by Dennis Patrick

It’s to keep the player immersed in the game.

CD Projekt Red is a well-known video game development studio. After their release of The Witcher, trilogy came to an end, more focus was put into their next project, Cyberpunk 2077. This is another open-world RPG experience for fans but one that is set in the distant future and while it has plenty of fans eager to get their hands on a copy to enjoy, there has been some criticism as of late. It turns out that there are plenty of fans who are actually not interested in the first-person perspective decision the developers had decided on.

You would have thought Cyberpunk 2077 would make it to the release date without having any big issues prior for developers to deal with. Unfortunately, that wasn’t the case as it seems that CD Projekt Red was getting plenty of heat over the first-person perspective that the game will lock players within. We now know that the studio had a reason behind the decision which was unveiled to VGC by level designer Max Pears.

Gameplay Footage

Max Pears stated that the development studio didn’t just toss together these mechanics without thought and discussion. When it came down to a first-person perspective it was intended to keep players feeling immersed within the game. The developer used the demo shown for the game previously as an example where the protagonist has a gun pulled and pointed to the face which was the viewpoint of the player.

With these interactions, its meant to keep players feeling like they are the protagonist and not just controlling a character on the screen. Still, this decision has left some contemplating if they will pick the game up when it launches for PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC platforms on April 16, 2020. As a side note, it is worth mentioning that a copy of the game will also be available through Google Stadia at a later date.
