Assassin’s Creed 4 Modern Day Sections a ‘Goodbye to Desmond’

October 8, 2013 by Stephen Daly

A new TV trailer for the game has also been released which shows Edward’s story through tattoos.

Ubisoft has released a new TV ad spot for Assassin's Creed 4: Black Flag which off the various adventures of protagonist Edward Kenway through his tattoos.

New information on the game's modern day sections have also been revealed by game director Ashraf Ismail on the UbiBlog.

Ismail revealed that if you do everything in the modern day parts of the game you can spend up to five hours. He added:

"For the main path – the stuff you’re required to do – it’s somewhere between 20 and 25 minutes. You leave the Animus five times during the game’s main path and each time you’re there for about three to four minutes.

"We pretty much tried to boil it down to its most core essence because we know there are people out there who really don't like the present day, and that's okay. You don’t have to like it, but it's part of the brand. For the people who like the present day and are big fans, we put in a lot of fan service and a lot of fun optional content. You get to choose if you want it or not."

Ismail said the modern section form part of a "meta story" and allow players to "say goodbye to Desmond." He went on to give details of some of the activities you can get up to.

"You have to hack computers and figure out how to access certain rooms and get through security. There is gameplay in just being able to access that stuff. When you access it, the content you find is a reward for us. Through this content you see what happens to Desmond after Assassin’s Creed 3. We used it as an opportunity to say goodbye to Desmond. There’s actually a lot of stuff linked to him that you find."

It was also suggested that Desmond wouldn't be the only returning character for Assassin's Creed 4. Last year, Ubisoft said Assassin's Creed 3 would resolve Desmond's story but it seems they've changed their mind.

Assassin's Creed 4: Black Flag is set for release on October 28th in North America and November 1st in Europe for PS3, Wii U, and Xbox 360. The PS4 version will be released on November 15th in North America and November 29th in Europe. PC gamers can pick up the title on November 19th. Finally, the Xbox One edition will be launched on November 22nd.
