Beyond: Two Souls Cost $27 Million to Develop

September 23, 2013 by Stephen Daly

Game cost $5 million more than Heavy Rain.

In a Le Figaro interview with David Cage it has been revealed that upcoming PS3 release Beyond: Two Souls cost just $27 million to make – quite a modest sum in terms of triple A development.

According to Le Figaro "Its budget of  €20 million is funded by Sony." Of course, Quantic Dream is a second party developer for Sony so the fact they're funding it is hardly surprising but the €20 million price tag certainly is.

This is a bit of a jump from the €16.7/$22.54 million figure that Quantic Dream's last game, Heavy Rain, cost but still well below the average title of its size.

Heavy Rain generated over €100/$134 million for Sony and was described by Quantic Dream president Guillaume de Fondaumiere as "very profitable".

With many developers complaining of rising costs, particularly with the next-gen shift, perhaps many could stand to benefit from Quantic Dream's model for keeping budgets down.

Grand Theft Auto 5 is reported to have cost $265 million for development and marketing – it has so far made over a $1 billion in revenue – while Star Wars The Old Republic is believed to have cost $200 million just to development.

Qunatic Dream's costs are particularly impressive when you factor in Hollywood stars Ellen Page and Willem Dafoe are appearing in the game while veteran composer Hans Zimmer is also contributing.

Beyond: Two Souls is set for release on October 8th in North America and October 11th in Europe.
