Sony PlayStation CEO Will Continue Seeking Out Narrative-Driven Games

June 6, 2019 by Dennis Patrick

Story games will continue to be a big factor for PlayStation.

There are a number of big video game titles out this generation but one factor that has become quite popular is games as a service. We’re seeing more titles release into the market that focuses mainly on battle royale game modes or on-going campaigns that developers put more effort into the gameplay mechanics or DLC. One area that Sony is having some great success in is story-driven titles along with the singleplayer focus being front and center. Now that we’re moving on to the next generation of consoles, questions are being flooded online as to what we can expect in the future.

Cnet recently got a chance to speak with the PlayStation CEO, Jim Ryan, who got on the subject of their views on narrative focused titles. Within the interview, Cnet asked about the story experiences that Sony has been putting into their games and if there will be any entertainment value to these type of games in the future. Jim Ryan stated that Sony has been having some real success in the narrative-driven titles. That is also a genre that Sony will not abandon anytime soon.

We’ve never had greater success with our own narrative-driven, story-based games than we’re having right now. We feel good about that, and it’s certainly not a genre of gaming we’ll ever walk away from.

Likewise, the CEO also spoke about games as a service and if they are done right they can continue to be popular. Unfortunately, we don’t know just when Sony will show off the PlayStation 5 as E3 could have been the perfect stage to unveil the console. However, Sony is not attending the E3 expo this year leaving it to be anyone’s guess as to when we’ll see the actual reveal for the upcoming console.
