Project CARS Demoed In 4K, Thanks To Nvidia And Panasonic

September 10, 2013 by Ryan Parreno

Three companies collaborating in hopes to popularize 4K gaming.

Slightly Mad Studios’ game Project CARS has been laying dormant for a few months, but today in the IFA exhibition in Berlin, they announced a surprise partnership with Nvidia and Panasonic to reveal the game running on 4K Ultra HD, in Panasonic’s new Smart Viera TVs.

They set up an impressive and flashy demo station in the showroom floor, as they brought a full sized Mercedes CLK AMG DTM and placed a Smart Viera screen displaying the game squarely in front of it.

The combination of Nvidia’s Titan graphics card and Panasonic’s Smart Viera television makes Project CARS the highest resolution racing game to be revealed this year. This is a far higher resolution than any racing game revealed or demonstrated for either the Xbox One or Playstation 4 thus far. I know this talk won’t impress you, of course, so check out the demo below.

In this trailer explaining Panasonic’s interest in spreading 4K Ultra HD, they not only got Nvidia’s Lars Weinland and Slightly Mad Studios’ Andy Tudor, but Square Enix’s Naoki Yoshida, representing Final Fantasy 14, to talk about the benefits that 4K Ultra HD, and their collaboration with Panasonic, could bring to gaming.

Who knew Panasonic had an interest at making a go in the gaming market? I don’t know if Sony would be fazed at their actions, but as a 4K TV manufacturer that does not have products that compete with personal computers, Panasonic may be in a better position to evangelize 4K gaming than their more prominent rival.

As for Project CARS, this has been the latest we have heard from them in a while. I know the project has faced criticism for their crowdfunding woes, and they definitely took this step forward to help establish the game’s legitimacy. We hope it becomes more than just a demo, and maybe the more prosperous gamers among us can verify if it does 4K as well as they claim it can.
