Frostbite 3 eases multiplatform development for Dragon Age: Inquisition

August 7, 2013 by Ryan Parreno

We share more details about battles, environments, crafting and multiplayer.

BioWare credits Frostbite 3 for making development of Dragon Age:Inquisition easy across five platforms. Thanks to it, the game will have destructible environments, and will also let you create structures. While the next gen version of the games will look better than current gen, PC will get full optimization, with special attention paid to keyboard and mouse controls.

Battle speed will be somewhere between Dragon Age 1 and 2. Subsequently, BioWare is trying to strike a balance so that you won't constantly be pausing and playing, nor will it be all action all the time. You will be able to freely switch between any character in your party, as well as choose each character's AI behavior. Combining action and RPG elements, battles will be deliberate, with slower attacks and better AI enemies that will make players examine the battlefield. Your enemies will have specializations, and will be able to coordinate their attacks in a way that makes sense. As a player, you gain access to skill trees, with different abilities and specialties, and each class will have particular abilities that will define their role in battle.

Frostbite's rendering of environments won't just be for show. The game will look different based on what time you play it, and weather will affect exploration. For example, rain will make the roads muddy and harder to traverse.

You can collect materials from enemies and different environments to craft yourself some armor. BioWare promises that at some point late in the game, you will be able to match whatever armor you started with, in any color you prefer. Although the armor will change your appearance, BioWare claims at their core, your character will look the same.

Finally, multiplayer has neither been confirmed or denied, but BioWare mentioned how they liked the good reception to the multiplayer applied to Mass Effect, which hints that they may be trying the same for this game.
