Capcom Considers Remaking Resident Evil Remake

August 28, 2018 by Dennis Patrick

It’s a remake inception.

There’s been a big push over the last few years for development teams to bring back video game classics with a fresh coat of paint and tweaks to the game mechanics. Capcom has brought out their classic survival horror video game IP, Resident Evil in 1996, where the franchise is still going strong to this very day. However, to give players a look back to where it all started, Capcom delivered a remake of Resident Evil for the Nintendo GameCube in 2002.

That remake was a massive visual improvement in comparison to its initial release. However, to take it just a bit further, Capcom delivered fans another visual upgrade with a remaster of the Resident Evil remake in 2015. Now the development team has revealed that they will bring back even more classic titles for today’s latest platforms.

“We’ve got a lot of fans who ask for their favorite games, but we’re not going to commit to anything right now. We’d like to keep our possibilities open for the future and see what makes the most sense when we come to it. We don’t want to feed just nostalgia.”

Speaking with Game Informer, Capcom director Kazunori Kadoi spoke of how the developers are aiming to deliver remakes that will covey the same feeling that IP delivered when it first released. Kazunori noted that there are gamers everywhere who are asking for different IPs to receive a remake, but the development team seems to only be interested in remaking a game if they can provide more than just nostalgia.

As a result, it looks like the original Resident Evil is also in the realm of possibilities. The director made note that enough time has passed since the initial remake where it would not be laughable to remake Resident Evil once again.

“Certainly enough time has passed that it wouldn’t be laughable to remake the remake. I personally think that would be an interesting thing to do.”

Currently, Capcom is remaking Resident Evil 2 for the PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC platforms. The title is set to release on January 25, 2019.
