Kongregate reveals 1st five mobile games to be released

July 2, 2013 by Ryan Parreno

Hopes to duplicate success in browser to mobile space

Gamestop subsidiary and browser based game platform has finally announced their initial batch of five games to herald their entry into mobile. The games are Tyrant: Unleashed, Bloodrealm, Sheep Happens, Endless Boss Fight, and Cardinal Quest 2. Tyrant Unleashed is the first to release this month, with other games to follow through the summer. All games will be free to play and offer in-app purchases.

Tyrant Unleashed by Synapse Games is a collectible card game that offers both cooperative and competitive multiplayer. The browser-based version of the game already boasts an active gaming community, with over 50 million downloads, a fan forum, and daily tournaments.

Its this preexisting community, complete with self-contained forums, that Kongregate hopes to leverage by bringing Tyrant Unleashed, as well as its other games, to mobile, with some intersection between PC and mobile players.

Kongregate announced their plans to enter the mobile space last February, setting up the Kongregate Mobile Developers Program. Under the program, up and coming developers would get sponsorship from its $ 10 million initiative to produce games to be brought to PC and mobile. Kongregate also set up their own game development studio, headed by former Zynga general manager Panayoti Haritatos.Haritatos himself proved his worth in Kongregate when the success of his game, Bloody Fun Day, led to him being bought out of Zynga in the first place

Kongregate's earlier attempt to enter the mobile space involved a partnership with Adobe to port their Flash games to Android. This move was later compromised when Google itself announced abandoning Flash support for HTML5.

We covered Gamestop's purchase of Kongregate 2 years ago. Now a force in the browser gaming scene, Gamestop hopes the company can replicate its success to add to its more diversified portfolio.
