Square Enix and the ESA, which organises E3 each year, have been busy putting up posters starring Final Fantasy XIII's Lightning around Los Angeles in anticipation of the convention next month where more information on Final Fantasy: Lightning Returns XIII is set to be revealed.
The fact that Square Enix is making the heroine so prominent may suggest that the publisher plans to make the game the centerpiece of its E3 or at least a very significant part of it.
Yesterday, it was reported that development on Lightning Returns is almost complete with Square Enix estimating they have 70% of the game's production finished.
The game is set to be released later this year although no launch date has yet been announced and it will be coming to both the Xbox 360 and PS3.
Lightning Returns isn't the only Final Fantasy on the way with Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn heading to PS3 and PC on August 27th. The HD remakes of Final Fantasy X, X-2 and VIII are all progressing as well.
Shinji Hashimoto, Final Fantasy's brand director, has asked fans to "Please be excited for E3 this year." Given that Hashimoto made those remarks at the PlayStation 4's announcement event in Fabruary it's a safe bet that Square Enix are cooking something for next-gen consoles which may see some exclusive DLC or features for Sony's console.
Alternatively, Square Enix could be developing Lightning Returns for PS4 and Xbox One as well as current-gen systems. Either way we'll know in less than two weeks' time.
This isn't the first time Lightning's had an E3 poster, in 2009 Final Fantasy XIII posters covered three entire buildings in LA. For a better look at the Lightning Returns poster see below.
