Journey Wins Most of the Game Developers Choice Awards

March 28, 2013 by Jordan Erica Webber

Journey wins six of the ten main awards.

The winners of the 13th Game Developers Choice Awards have been announced and, surprising no one, Journey has secured a significant chunk of the available prizes (i.e. the majority of those whose winners haven't already been chosen). In fact, the game won every award for which it was nominated (which in turn was essentially every single award for which it qualified): Innovation Award, Best Audio, Best Downloadable Game, Best Game Design, and Best Visual Arts.

Of course, there were some awards Journey couldn't win. One of these was Best Handheld/Mobile Game, which went to The Room. The game beat out the 3DS title Kid Icarus: Uprising, the unique Vita game Gravity Rush, Sound Shapes, and another mobile title: Hero Academy.

Best Narrative, of course, went to The Walking Dead from Telltale Games. It would have been surprising if Mass Effect 3 had won considering the response to its ending, but – although The Walking Dead obviously deserved to win – it's a shame Spec Ops: The Line didn't get any recognition.

I'm not really sure why, but Far Cry 3 won Best Technology. I guess it's because it's so pretty. You'll have to decide for yourselves whether it's prettier than the other nominees: PlanetSide 2, Halo 4, Call of Duty: Black Ops II, Assassin's Creed III.

I'm also not sure how the Audience Award Winner is decided, but I do know that the winner was Dishonored, which is nice because that is a very good game that most people have probably already forgotten about. Special honour awards went to Dr. Ray Muzyka and Dr. Grek Zeschuk (Lifetime Achievement), Steve Russell (Pioneer Award), and Chris Melissinos (Ambassador Award).

Are you happy with the results? Or do you spot any undeserving winners in the ranks, or know of any games that seem to have been unfairly forgotten?
