Last week there was a little bit of a furore over EA’s CFO Blake Jorgensen’s words regarding the company’s use of microtransactions in all of their upcoming games. We took his words to mean something that he doesn’t think is entirely appropriate. He’s gone on record again to try and better convey the message he was attempting to get across before that we catastrophically misunderstood.
Previously, when speaking at the Morgan Stanley Technology, Media, and Telecom Conference, he told us:
“We are building into all of our games the ability to pay for things along the way; to get to a higher level. And consumers are enjoying and embracing that way of business.”
Today a Wedbush Technology Conference he clarified that his very specific and pointed soundbite about the future of microtransactions in every game was misleading. He clarifies:
"I made a statement in the conference along the lines of 'We'll have micro-transactions in our games' and the community read that to mean all our games, and that's really not true… All of our mobile games will have micro-transactions in them, because almost all of them are going to a world where they are play for free."
When previously we read the word “all” in the first statement, we took it to mean “all”. Today’s revisit to the topic has made us recognise the error. We should have instead ignored the word entirely.
We’re sorry for any confusion that was caused by our actions and will endeavour to never make this mistake again.
