While most publishers are pushing for their gaming brands to become movies, don't expect the same treatment for Call of Duty any time soon.
In a thorough profile of Kotick in the New York Times, they talk about how people see him as the "enemy" when it comes to videogame development, his business panache and of course, Call of Duty. While the actual piece isn't filled with bombastic news on the industry's main "villain," it did reveal that Kotick has no plans for a Call of Duty any time soon and thinks doing one would "taint" the brand.
Call of Duty may look like a movie, but Mr. Kotick has little interest in turning it into one — and has turned down several studios’ requests. He says movies based on video games rarely please devoted fans and could taint the brand.
So, while games like Need for Speed, Assassin's Creed, Splinter Cell and its ilk will be getting the big screen treatment in the near future, don't expect Mason, Captain Price or any of Call of Duty's characters to make an appearance any time soon.
Would you even want to see a Call of Duty movie or can any war movie with lots of explosions work just by slapping a Call of Duty name to it? If it does ever get made, do you agree with Kotick that it could "taint" the brand or are they doing a good enough job of it themselves with their yearly releases?
