If the fallen London, steampunk empire of Sunless Skies sounds vaguely familiar to you, it’s probably because it’s of its prequel, Sunless Sea. Independent studio Failbetter Games launched a kickstarter for Sunless Skies just a couple of days ago, and after an influx of hopeful backers jumped on board, the game has already surpassed its original funding goal of £100,000.
Along with the kickstarter comes new information about the project: It is 20th century London, and the world around you is deep, dark and foreboding. You are but a humble captain, with the power to choose your fate. Together with your very customisable ship, you must navigate the celestial heavens while recruiting a team of unpredictable crewmen to aid you on your expedition. Sunless Skies displays its RPG roots in the combat system, a challenging tactical affair that demands planning and outmanoeuvring opponents.
Although many of the higher tier kickstarter rewards are no longer available, interested players can still back the game today. Sunless Skies is expected to release in 2018 for PC, Mac and Linux.
