A source close to Microsoft and their company plans has told The Verge that Microsoft is looking to launch a retail store in the UK in early 2013. There will initially be an online store launch later this summer followed by a full retail store in March of next year.
Kevin Turner, Microsoft's COO, revealed last year that they plan on launching 75 new retail stores over the course of the coming two years, adding to the 19 currently open.
Since Microsoft stores already exist, the idea of one popping up in the UK isn't terribly huge news, but with the coming of Surface, it makes the company seem as though they are directly taking on Apple.
I don't know if that's a fight Microsoft can win. Microsoft enthusiasts might have been clamouring for a Windows based tablet three or four years ago, but that hunger has been sated by tablets running Android, Linux, and Mac operating systems.
One can only hope that if they recreate the Genius Bar, Microsoft chooses to add some alcohol.
